DJ Roxxi  caught up with  DJ Deon Govender and finds out how it was like performing with Hip Hop legend Fat Man Scoop.

I have to say that it’s quite remarkable when you watch an artists star rise. Having known popular East Coast Radio DJ Deon Govender for a few years I have to say that he is one of the most hard-working DJs in our industry.

Starting off at retail radio to eventually growing his brand and fan base to thousands, Deon has definitely worked hard at pushing the limits.

From radio to club gigs, Deon knows exactly what his Durban fans want to hear on the dance-floor!

So it comes as no surprise that Deon has hosted and played alongside names such as Jay Sean, T-Pain, Busta Rhymes and most recently Fatman Scoop.

I caught up with Deon to get the scoop on him performing with this Hip Hop legend

From playing his tracks all through your DJ career to interviewing and performing alongside Fatman Scoop – how does this feel?

Most songs these days have samples with Fatman Scoop on so for him to perform live in Durban was amazing. He dropped shouts in between the music & his crowd interaction was out of this world. Definitely something I will never forget.

Having played for huge events such as Aquafest and the Jay Sean concert, you’re pretty used to large crowds. Tell us a bit more about the crowd and the venue for this gig?

Well Cube Night Club was converted into two areas. Outside was a house tech area and the main club area was big – housing about 2000 people.

The crowd was on fire as every single person was shocked when I introduced him. They thought he would appear from back-stage but he actually walked through the crowd even taking pictures with everyone. Not many artists do that!

Besides performing alongside Fatman Scoop, you also got to hang out with this amazing performer.
Can you tell us a bit more about his personality?

Well I have to say, no artist I have ever seen is more friendly and down to earth than Fatman Scoop. He wants to learn about people here in South Africa. We chatted about Africa and he even loves reading! Matter of fact after fetching him from the airport the first thing he wanted to get was a good book to read. He is the hype man, and definitely gets the crowd going. I don’t look at as it having been a concert but an experience!

Having just wrapped up this amazing gig please tell us about any exciting gigs coming up:

Well I have played at beach events such as Rock Da beach and Aquafest as well as outdoor events like Colourfest, H2o Durban. Keep it locked on my page on Facebook or follow me on Twitter for exclusive updates!

You are a well respected radio and club DJ with a large social media fan base. Will you be extending your brand to other areas?

Yes! In May I do have gigs in PMB and in June I’m headed to Newcastle. Hopefully I will be in JHB during July and I definitely want to head down to Cape Town soon. I’m looking forward to travelling and meeting more peeps at my gigs.

Well it looks like 2013 is definitely a year where we can expect many more international artists here in South Africa. For many die-hard old school Hip Hop fans seeing Fatman Scoop live in action was truly a dream come true.

If you rocked out to Deon’s set at Cube then make sure you tune into East Coast Radio on the weekends for “In the House” and turn it up loud!
