DaliWonga Dumps “Re Squeezang” For Brenda’s “Too Late For Mama”
DaliWonga is one of the leading male Amapiano vocalists currently. A fact which was affirmed by his double nomination at the second annual Amapiano Awards where he was nominated for Best Amapiano Vocalist and Best Amapiano On-Stage Performance.

Moreover, ahead of the confirmation of his nominations, DaliWonga released his first single of the year titled 10 KM with Mas Musiq.

However, the release of the collaborative single is not the single that he was expected to release as he had previewed another single which earned him facing headlines of allegedly plagiarising someone else’s work.

Reported at the time as:

Taking to his Instagram recently, DaliWonga previewed what is set to be his first single of 2023 titled Re Lokeleng, which he worked on with Mas Musiq.

As soon as the song preview landed on Twitter, tweeps were quick to not only diss the song. But call out DaliWonga for his failure to credit Dimakatso.

DaliWonga dumps Re Squeezang for Brenda’s Too Late For Mama
While DaliWonga might have scrapped Re Sueezang due to allegations that he was plagiarising the works of the aforementioned TikTok content creator, it seems that he did not steer away from the allegations of his non-originality.
This is as 10 KM is not wholly original. This is as the single is inspired by the 1989 hit single by the late Queen of African Pop Music Brenda Fassie’s Too Late For Mama. The original single was inspired by the news story at the time of a mother who, as the song suggests, hid under a tree during a thunderstorm to protect her infant child. However, the story did not have a happy ending as the mother and child were struck by lightning while hiding under the tree in question.
However, DaliWonga subverts the lyrics for his single. Instead of the story of the song being about a mother’s love for her infant child. The single is instead a romantic retelling of how a man at his wits ends dating a woman he alleges never spends time at home and is always out with “friends.”
Given that the sample is immediately recognizable, the song was a safe bet by DaliWonga and Mas Musiq. However, whether or not it deters from the actual crux of why he was being dragged in the first place is a different discussion altogether.

This is as at the height of the debate of Amapiano artists continually sampling and referencing already established hits, the crux of the debate was put succinctly by Sis Gugu when she shared a thread explaining that:

“Everytime there’s a trend created by “regular people”, it ends up on a piano track. Hamba Ha, Re squeezeng, Inganekwane etc- I never see those creators in these credits or videos. Artists are stealing from unknown creators & we’re not speaking up for them. Please credit the kids.”

Sis Gugu went on to add that:

“I’ve seen this so many times and it’s getting weird. They credit their fellow celebs but let it be a regular kid from the hood, with small numbers, nobody credits or defends them. They complain about piracy but they do the same to smaller artists? No man.”
