This all started as a rumour that Distruction Boyz's summer smash 'Omunye' sounded too similar to DJ Lag's own composition called 'Trip to New York'.
Now it's more than that, in actual fact, it's become a 31 page report which was requested for the forensic investigation for the copyright of the song by DJ Lag's management. City Press states that the report, done by song analysis expert and trained musician Sakhile Moleshe, stated that there were a number of similarities between 'Omunye' and 'Trip to New York.' The question now became: who does it belong to and who did it first?
Credits for the Distruction Boyz song is given to Siphesihle Njokweni, a young producer who comes all the way from Cape Town and goes by the alias DJ Mphyd. Distruction Boyz admit to having bought the production from the Cape Town DJ who in-turn denied knowing about the existence of DJ Lag's 'Trip to new York.' Further investigation went into the timelines within which both songs were released.
DJ Lag released Trip to New York as an exclusive release to his fans on datafilehost on the 6th of April 2017 and released the EP containing the song on the 27th of July via Whatsapp to his fans. This is further confirmed by him posting a video on the 6th of April showing him in studio producing the song
DJ Mphyd claimed that the song song which later became 'Omunye' was released on the 25th of June last year under the title 'Gqongo (Bhengela Vox)'. When one half of Distruction Boyz Thobani 'Que' Mgobhozi was asked they never heard DJ Lag's EP and caught wind of this, his response was that they never shared music and they just spoke regularly.
