It seems like just yesterday we all woke up to the sudden passing of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa. And even though it's been three years since his passing, Kelly Khumalo still can't erase the day she lost the love of her life.
Senzo Meyiwa's death is still a painful memory not only for the country but for those who loved him. One of those people who will never forget the late soccer player, who tragically lost his life in 2014, is Kelly Khumalo.
The Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was shot and killed at Kelly's home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. No one has been arrested.
Speaking on the Fresh Breakfast this morning about that day, Kelly said: "I will never forget that switch, and I would never wish that switch on anyone even on my worst enemy. I don't wish that on anyone. Because one minute we were at the top of the mountain with happiness, and the next I was at the bottom of the sea where I was buried by everything and anything."
Kelly, who said she'll never forget that day, continued: " I feel like I died there with him at that particular time. Because it's like 'awu, bengi happy five minutes ago, and the next minute the person that I love the most is gone'. And I'm not just dealing with the loss and the switch, I'm dealing with the entire country who's bombarding me with a whole lot of things that I'm not responsible for."
When asked if she's healed from it, she said she'll never heal. "It's a process, and I don't think I'll safely say I've healed because I've got questions I'm like 'what happened? Why would anyone do such a horrible thing?' I feel like, I feel so robbed because there are certain things I'll never have answers to, and I will never be at the place where I feel like I've healed."
She explained that she looks at her daughter, Thingo, and thinks "you don't deserve this. You also wanted to have your father around".
Kelly told DJ Fresh and his team that she had the best time of her life with Senzo.
"And I had one person that I could safely say really loved me because I could tell. I mean it was not about having to tell me that he loves me, but he showed me that he loved me. And anything beyond that, I'm not interested. I will forever hold onto that love. And that's it."
