Renowned South African actor, Moshoeshoe Chabeli, died this week following a battle with cancer. Best known for his starring role as Richard on SABC2 sitcom Mponeng, Moshoeshoe was a great-grandson of Lesotho King Moshoeshoe I and a stalwart within the SA entertainment industry.

He worked as a script editor on Muvhango for some six year before landing his breakthrough role on Mponeng, and went on to star in television series including Gaz'lam, Zero Tolerance, 90 Plein Street, and The Lab.

Moshoeshoe most recently portrayed the role of recurring character Mogorosi in M-Net soapie The Wild and he has credits for feature films including Stander, Beat the Drum, and The Forgotten Kingdom.

Speaking fondly of her close friend and fellow actor, Lilian Dube told the Daily Sun: “He was like a brother to me. We knew each other before we were on TV.

“We have worked together for a long time since his first break on Mopheme and recently as my husband on Mponeng. His death is very painful.

“As a cancer survivor myself I had hoped he too would survive. My condolences to his family, friends, and fans.”

Moshoeshoe passed away on Wednesday, at the age of 67.

His brother Moje has confirmed a scheduled funeral service at the Roman Catholic Church in Mulbarton, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 7 November, at 9am.
