Speaking about the project, which is called “Trek 4 Mandela”, Lebyane told Daily Sun: “It is about caring for girls and keeping them in school.”
The project, launched by Richard Mabaso, also raises funds to provide sanitary pads to indigent girls, something the Sunrise presenter used to do out of her own pocket.
“It’s something (giving away sanitary pads to girls in schools) I previously did at Lehasedi High School in Shatale, just outside Bushbuckridge. I was doing it with my own personal funds,” she told IOL.
However, she added that the initiative was costing her a lot of money.
“The planning was taxing and time-consuming because I was doing everything on my own. But now I have teamed up with Caring 4 Girls, Trek 4 Mandela and the Nelson Mandela Foundation to do what I am passionate about,” she added.
The 39-year-old added that she has now become an activist for women’s rights.
“I’ve found myself being an activist without trying to. I am not a feminist but strongly believe in equal rights for all,” she added.
Speaking about women who were trying to secure a place in the entertainment industry, Lebyane advised that looks are not everything.
“Appearance should not be the primary focus. Remain true to yourself,” she told Daily Sun.
