An ex-boyfriend of late model Reeva Steenkamp has opened up about claims of a heated argument between Oscar Pistorius and his former long-term girlfriend, who he says was characteristically kind and never disposed to hostility or arguments.

A Port Elizabeth-based jockey, Wayne Agrella was in a relationship with Steenkamp for about six years, after meeting her through her father Barry, a horse trainer, but they parted ways when she moved to Johannesburg to pursue a career in modelling.

Speaking to the Cape Times, Agrella said he can't recall as single incident in which Steenkamp raised her voice during the many years they were together, and described her as "warm, loving, everything sweet".

Wayne had the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship under Barry, a recognised person in his field, and reminisced about his typical answer to people's questions about the experience.

"Meeting Barry Steenkamp's daughter," is what he used to say when asked about the best part of working under the well-known trainer.

Wayne also remembers Reeva as a "plain Jane" and a "Daddy's girl" who would "always support the person she's with".

"She's exactly like her dad," he added.

"He'll give his last away before he worries about himself.

"She loved cooking. She loved fish. She was very, very healthy. She could make a deadly salad.

"She should've actually been born on Valentine's Day. She got taken away on that day. It's sad."

Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius goes on trial for the premeditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp on 3 March 2013.
