Just days after the whole country celebrated history in the making, where songstress Lira became the first African woman to have a Barbie doll created in her image, it has come to light that she might have been a plan B.

According to Sunday World, the makers of Barbie only honoured Lira after Yvonne Chaka Chaka declined their offer TWICE.

It appears that the dolls looked like the original, but darker. They didn't have any of her features.

"They showed me the doll and I told them that I'm not up for it if the said dolls will look nothing like me. This is simply because I was promised something that will look exactly like me. I respect myself that much," she was quoted saying.

The Umqombothi hit maker further explained that the second attempt was just as bad and thereafter, the company ignored her.

While the Princess of Africa says that she did not want to look desperate for this "once-off Barbie doll", she admits that she loved the idea.

"I was much in love with the idea that Barbie can be anything, like an astronaut or musician. I did not appreciate that they wanted to use my name on what looked nothing like me," she said.

The dolls were made in celebration of Barbie's 60th anniversary and Mrs Chaka Chaka was actually supposed to have been honoured on March 8 to coincide with International Women's Day celebrations, but after she sent them packing twice, they found another woman who is also an inspiration.

Lira joins other fierce women who have been honoured globally, including Black-ish and Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi.
