Ever wondered what it takes to sell a film? By the time the movie has hit the cinemas, someone somewhere has worked themselves off finding suitable distributors. This doesn’t happen by chance. It’s a deliberate effort from all parties involved.
The first thing, as we learnt from a professional distributor is to have a quality film. How many times have you watched a local film and been disappointed with the quality of the sound or pictures? It hurts our potential to sell our films and reach a global audience.
That said, as Franciane puts it, it doesn’t really hurt our potential to make money in the continent so perhaps that’s why we continue to have these problems.
“If the films are meant for the local market, then it’s not such a big deal because regardless of the technical issues they may have, they tend to sell and even produce profits for them.”
Even so, things are changing especially with the coming in of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon into the continent.
“Recently African pay TV MultiChoice Group, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky unveiled a partnership which will form the new Showmax group and create the leading streaming service in Africa.”
