The highly coveted Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will be hosting a star-studded event to celebrate and honour exceptional contributors to jazz.

The Great Gatsby themed evening will take place at the Sandton Convention Center on Saturday 24th August 2019 and Radio Personality Lupi Ngcayisa will be the host.

Having hosted the event 3 times already - this Saturday making it his fourth - Zalebs spoke to the TV producer about this prestigiuos event and his role.

"The people within the art work tirelessly at ensuring that jazz in South Africa does not perish and stays alive. They work hard to ensure that South Africa at large gets exposed to the genre and it's texture and it's colours. So Joy of Jazz says "we see you, we acknowledge you and we appreciate your contribution, " Ngcayisa said.

Not only does the event honour jazz musicians. Over the years, incredible contributors to this genre have been honoured from across the spectrum.

Last year, radio presenters who have kept jazz alive were recognised - Moja Love's KG Moeketsi was one of the awardees, as well as news anchor and radio presenter, Nothemba Madumo.

"In previous years, there's been a mix where promoters, musicians, producers and journalists have been honoured. We've had the likes of Stimela being recognised. So basically, it's people who are playing a role within the jazz industry whose efforts are being acknowledged," he adds.

As an avid jazz listener, Ngcayisa has had the privilege of working with many jazz musicians and he has noted the growth in the genre.

"We've got a surge of young, incredibly talented jazz musicians that have come to the fore. The life in downtown Jo'burg  is insane! There are live performances every week.

"Gone are the days where the biggest misconception was that jazz is for old, boring people. Jazz is for people who have an appreciation for quality music. If you look at most of the songs;  hip-hop takes from Jazz. R'nB and house music take from jazz. Jazz is the mother of it all," Ngcayisa said.

His greatest wish is for beneficiaries of the Jazz Honours to also put young players and contributors forward.

Although he could not give us names of some of the performers on Saturday night, Ngcayisa did promise performances by remarkable musicians who have been doing great in the various styles that the jazz scene offers.

The Jazz Honors is part of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival, scheduled from the 26th – 28th September at the Sandton Convention Center. For more information on the festival, the line up and ticket information, visit: http://www.joyofjazz.co.za/home
