Fans of popular soap opera ‘Muvhango’ are in for a surprise next year, when a new main character will be introduced.

According to the City Press, producers have been auditioning some of South Africa’s hottest celebrities for a new lead role in the SABC2 drama, but insiders claim that the situation has become somewhat heated, with rumoured enemies Bonang Matheba and Lerato Kganyago both up for this much-coveted job.

“I can tell you that this is a war,” said a source.

“They auditioned for the role of a young woman from the rural areas who migrated to Jozi and became a gold digger.”

Rumours about Matheba and Kganyago’s dislike for each other started doing the rounds last September when choreographer Somizi Mhlongo publicly said the latter would never be able to fill the shoes of friend Matheba after she left her job as presenter of music show ‘Live’ and Kganyago was considered as a replacement.

To add insult to injury, Matheba’s many fans have also labelled Kganyago a ‘Bonang copycat’ on Twitter.

Other high-profile celebs rumoured to be considered for the role are actress Terry Pheto, model Gail Mabalane, and ‘Intersexions’ actress Kay Matidze.
