South African actor Sphamandla Dhludhlu swapped the usual weekend plans for something far more meaningful during the Durban July celebrations, choosing to support his community instead of heading to one of the country’s biggest social events.
On Instagram, the performer explained that he and his family decided to put purpose ahead of partying. Rather than attend Durban July, they marked the occasion by observing his best friend’s birthday in a way that felt more impactful.
Instead of spending the weekend at the festivities, they delivered 350 food parcels to elderly residents, helping pensioners in their local area.
“This past weekend, we chose purpose over the party. Instead of attending Durban July to celebrate my best friend’s birthday, we celebrated in a way that truly mattered—by giving back,” he wrote.
The star of The River said the experience brought home an important message: real success isn’t determined by the high-profile events people manage to attend, but by the good they create for others.
“Real wealth isn’t measured by the events you attend, but by the lives you touch,” he added.
Looking back on the outreach effort, Sphamandla shared that witnessing the pensioners’ happiness and gratitude served as a powerful reminder of why community service matters.
“Seeing the smiles, hearing the words of gratitude, and knowing we made a difference was the greatest celebration we could have asked for,” he said.
He also encouraged others to stay focused on building genuine, memorable moments for the people around them—rather than getting caught up in pursuing personal milestones and experiences.
“May we never be too busy chasing moments that we forget to create them for others,” he concluded.
Known for his work in South African television, Sphamandla has earned recognition as a talented performer thanks to roles in projects including The River, Legacy, and Shaka iLembe.
