The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled the nation’s team for the African Region 2 Athletics Championship in Senegal, naming a mix of emerging under-18 and under-20 competitors to take part in a range of track and field disciplines.

With the event set to provide a further stage for Nigeria’s rising athletes, the championship is seen as an opportunity to test their abilities against some of the region’s most talented young performers while accelerating their growth on the continental circuit.

For the U-18 girls, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo and Tejiri Ugoh Praise have been selected for the 100 metres, 200 metres and relay races. Jecinta Andrews and Faith Ezechukwu will line up for the 400 metres and relay events, while Mary Chioma Edeh is entered for the 800 metres, 400 metres hurdles and relay competitions.

In the U-18 boys’ team, Bright Gift is set to compete in the 100 metres, 200 metres and relays. Mumuni Abdul Mohammed and David Udoh Dominion will represent Nigeria in the 400 metres and relay races, and Success Okereke will take on the discus throw and shot put events.

The U-20 girls’ contingent features Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu and Lucy Chiamaka Nwankwo for the sprint and relay categories, along with Tejiri Godwin competing in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Gang James has been listed for the 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres, while Emmanuel Shakamomodu Audu will contest the shot put and discus throw.

AFN’s delegation will travel with a support group including Olu Sule, Abdulhakeem Idris, Kate Areguamen, team physiotherapist Ruth Fabian Nkoteto and team secretary Taldang Tanimu.

Nigeria’s contingent is expected to head to Senegal on July 2 or July 3 as preparations move into their final phase, with hopes that the young team will put in strong showings and highlight the depth of the country’s athletics talent.
