Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has insisted that delivering silverware is the baseline requirement for anyone entrusted with Nigeria’s senior men’s national team.
Expectation of trophies and preparation for 2026
The Malian coach made the remarks as he discussed Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Unity Cup in London, along with upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
In an interview with TVC News, Chelle acknowledged the intense pressure that comes with leading the three-time African champions, but stressed that he feels fully ready for the role.
“When I took the job, my aim was to win. If you are the coach of the Super Eagles, you must win. There is pressure, but I am prepared to give my best for this country,” he said.
Staying committed despite reported interest
Chelle also underlined his commitment to Nigeria, despite reports suggesting that clubs and other national teams have shown interest in him after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
He argued that the Unity Cup will serve an important purpose beyond trophies, as it will allow the coaching staff to evaluate fresh faces and broaden the national team pool.

Talent scouting and fitness thoughts for Europe tests
Chelle said he believes Nigeria has a wealth of football talent and framed his job as identifying individuals who match the team’s playing philosophy and its long-term direction.
He added that he has been keeping tabs on players in the Nigeria Premier Football League and is open to bringing home-based performers into the national team environment.
