Millwall forward Femi Azeez has started the paperwork needed to secure a Nigerian passport, a move that signals he is drawing nearer to choosing an international path with Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches scheduled for September.
The London-born attacker is eligible for Nigeria through his father, while his mother means he is also able to represent both England, the country where he was born, and Spain.
Azeez’s case for Nigeria gained extra momentum during the recent Unity Cup, where he impressed and emerged as one of the competition’s most eye-catching performers. Across the tournament, the adaptable forward contributed to three goals, a return only matched by captain and veteran striker Terem Moffi.
Now, the 24-year-old is widely understood to be inclined toward representing Nigeria, having begun the required documentation in preparation for a potential involvement in the Super Eagles’ opening competitive match of the 2026-27 international season.
If Azeez were to take part in an AFCON qualifier in September, FIFA rules would effectively lock his senior international allegiance to Nigeria, ruling out any later opportunity to switch to either England or Spain at senior level.
Earlier in the year, Azeez had also been considered for Nigeria’s friendly matches in June against Poland and Portugal. However, the Nigeria Football Federation later confirmed that Millwall did not agree to release him after he was initially included in the squad—clarifying that he had not been left out, but rather withdrawn due to the club’s decision.
With the passport process now underway, Azeez appears to be positioning himself for a longer-term international future with the three-time African champions.
