Ikeja Electric Cites Lower National Grid Supply as Lagos Power Cuts Persist

Business

Ikeja Electric Plc said the continuing power cuts affecting parts of Lagos are linked to lower electricity supplies coming from the national grid, prompting the distributor to introduce temporary, controlled rationing to keep operations stable and spread the available power more evenly.

Key takeaways

  • Ikeja Electric blamed the outages on a reduction in electricity allocation from the national grid.
  • The company apologised to customers for the disruption and said multiple locations on its network are affected.
  • To cope with limited supply, it has started controlled load distribution and temporary load shedding.
  • Ikeja Electric said the approach is intended to support grid stability and achieve a fairer distribution of electricity.
  • It added that it is coordinating with stakeholders across the electricity value chain to improve supply and limit consumer impact.

Controlled rationing to maintain stability

In a statement released on its official X page on Friday, Ikeja Electric acknowledged the ongoing power supply difficulties and offered an apology to customers. The firm said the disruptions are being driven by reduced power allocation from the grid, leaving several areas within its distribution footprint to receive less electricity than usual.

In response, the company stated that it has begun controlled load distribution. Ikeja Electric said this step is designed to help maintain system stability while ensuring that the limited electricity available is shared across customers in a more equitable manner.

It further explained that, as part of efforts to keep the grid stable and distribute available power fairly, temporary load shedding is being applied across the affected feeders and locations.

Wider power shortages and gas supply constraints

Ikeja Electric’s update comes against the backdrop of continuing electricity shortages in Lagos and other parts of the country. The distributor pointed to broader generation constraints, saying they are largely tied to difficulties in gas supply, which in turn affect power generation nationwide.

The situation is persisting even as there have been recent initiatives at the state level aimed at reducing reliance on the national grid.

Looking ahead, Ikeja Electric said it is working closely with stakeholders across the electricity value chain to raise supply levels and reduce the effect of outages on consumers.
