South African media personality Lerato Kganyago has ignited a fresh wave of online discussion after an unusually vulnerable livestream, where she opened up about the pressures she and her husband, businessman Thami Ndlala, say they’ve been dealing with away from the public eye.
Emotional livestream: pressure, scrutiny, and a strain on marriage
The broadcaster, who recently stepped out as host for the Metro FM Music Awards, grew emotional during her livestream as she reflected on the backlash that has followed her and her husband in recent months. Speaking during the broadcast on 26 May 2026, Lerato said the constant criticism has started to weigh heavily on their relationship and day-to-day lives.
She suggested that their personal journey has been made even harder by public hostility, noting that they have yet to hold the kind of celebration they originally expected.
“I think life is even tougher for us because people just hate us. From the first day that we got married, I think that’s why we haven’t even had a white wedding,” she said.
Claims about industry support and recognition
Lerato also addressed what she described as a lack of support from people connected to the entertainment world. She claimed that some individuals who previously appeared to benefit from her husband’s willingness to help have since faded away during one of the most difficult chapters the couple has faced.
Beyond the personal strain, she added that her professional success is often overshadowed by criticism. Lerato said she rarely gets credited for her achievements, despite years of effort and persistence in the industry.
Hotel controversy and the Madlanga Commission allegations
During the same livestream, Lerato briefly confronted controversy tied to 12 on Hillel Villa and Spa, a luxury hotel in Johannesburg associated with her and her husband. The issue had previously resurfaced after comments made during testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
An unnamed witness alleged that the hotel served as a meeting location involving senior police officials and people the witness described as criminals.
Phantom pregnancy, business corruption denials, and online reaction
In a further deeply personal disclosure, Lerato revealed that she has also gone through a phantom pregnancy, describing the emotional pain she said she has carried quietly while being targeted by online attacks.
She also pushed back on claims that her husband’s companies gained advantages through government corruption. Lerato insisted that Thami’s progress was achieved independently.
“If only y’all knew that my husband does not even like tenders, he doesn’t like the government. He will start from the bottom with the R1 he has and hope for a miracle; that’s how Ndlala Mall came about,” she explained.
The livestream immediately drew intense responses on social media. Some users said they felt for Lerato as they reacted to her openness, while others continued debating the allegations involving the couple’s business activities.
- One post summarized the livestream as a moment where Lerato’s “breakdown” revealed details about her husband, marriage, pregnancy, and more.
