Lagos State Sports Trust Fund (LSSTF) has pushed its mission of bringing sport closer to children by handing sports gear to 1,020 public primary schools across the state. The move is aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and ensuring pupils get regular access to structured physical activity.
It comes as a continuation of earlier deliveries, with the trust having already supplied equipment to an even larger number of public schools in the recent past. LSSTF says the latest distribution is part of a sustained drive rather than a single, one-off exercise.

Speaking on the initiative, LSSTF chairman Wahid Enitan Oshodi said sport is far more than recreation. He described it as a practical instrument for education, discipline, better health, and stronger social cohesion, adding that it helps children learn teamwork, resilience, and leadership—values that he said align with the THEMES+ Agenda, especially around education, health, and youth involvement.
Oshodi also stressed that access should not depend on a child’s background, arguing that every youngster deserves an opportunity to take part in sports. He noted the trust has introduced a monitoring approach to ensure the equipment is properly used, kept in good condition, and fully accounted for.
To maximise the impact of the handover, LSSTF said it is currently training newly appointed Lagos State Coaches. The goal is to ensure the equipment is integrated into school sport programmes efficiently and that pupils benefit from consistent guidance.
Games and targets for pupils
The trust added that the equipment will enable schools to introduce pupils to a range of activities, including Football, Athletics, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Chess, and Monopoly, alongside other sporting options. LSSTF framed the distribution as a way of building a pathway for future talent, describing primary schools as the starting point for the next generation of Lagos, Nigerian, and global sports stars.
LSSTF executive secretary Olaposi Agunbiade echoed appreciation for the Lagos State government and the organisations supporting the programme. He used the opportunity to call for additional backing so the initiative can be expanded to cover every school in the state.
Agunbiade thanked partners and sponsors—Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), Sterling Bank Ltd, LASACO Assurance, and Chief Kessington Adebutu (Baba Ijebu). He said their financial and material contributions made the vision possible and added that the trust is looking forward to deeper collaboration as the project continues.
