Udinese have handed Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye the club’s Player of the Season award after a standout 2025/26 Serie A campaign that saw him rise to become one of the team’s key figures between the posts.
Okoye’s journey to that recognition was anything but straightforward. After a challenging opening stretch, he found himself temporarily sidelined as a result of a bureaucratic suspension tied to an alleged match-fixing matter. That situation was later cleared, allowing the Nigerian goalkeeper to return to action and ultimately rebuild his momentum.
Once he was back in the starting XI, he quickly reasserted himself as Udinese’s first-choice option. His performances brought a renewed authority to the back line, with several standout displays coming in pressure-packed fixtures against some of Italy’s most established clubs, including Juventus and AC Milan.
Across 29 league appearances, the 26-year-old ended the season with 10 clean sheets, a return that underlined his importance to the club’s defensive solidity and consistency. His form was so influential that he also earned a nomination for the Serie A Player of the Month award for May.
Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic highlighted not only Okoye’s results, but also the progress he has made in his overall game and role within the dressing room. The coach pointed to a steady development in his mentality and leadership as the season advanced.
Speaking through the club’s official media channels, Runjaic said Okoye has shown significant growth and now possesses the confidence, composure, and concentration typically associated with a top-level goalkeeper.
“Okoye’s evolution is clear for everyone to see. He is vital to our defensive phase and has kept us in games multiple times this season,” Runjaic said.
Runjaic also credited Udinese’s internal support structure, explaining that sporting director and former Swiss international Gokhan Inler, together with the goalkeeping coaching staff, worked closely with Okoye during the early-season difficulties to help him settle and find his rhythm again.
