Lionel Messi has added another landmark to his already extraordinary résumé, earning a spot in the Guinness World Records for becoming the first player to find the net in seven straight FIFA World Cup matches.
Guinness World Records revealed the achievement on Sunday, highlighting that Messi’s scoring run started in the Round of 16 clash with Australia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In its announcement, Guinness World Records stated: “Lionel Messi is the first player to score in SEVEN consecutive World Cup matches, a run that goes back to Argentina’s Round of 16 game against Australia in 2022”.
The recognition places Messi ahead of every other figure in World Cup history for consecutive tournament appearances ending with a goal.
The streak traces back to the 2022 knockout meeting against Australia and then continues through Argentina’s following World Cup games.
Messi steered Argentina to World Cup success in Qatar in 2022, finishing the tournament as the second-highest scorer and collecting the Golden Ball for being named the competition’s best player.
The newest Guinness World Records accolade further reinforces Messi’s extensive list of football feats, as the 38-year-old continues to build on his legacy on the international stage.
