South Africans were left worried after veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi appeared in a widely shared photo that made it look like he was struggling.
The award-winning performer, celebrated for iconic television performances, seemed noticeably worn down in the image, wearing torn clothing that led many social media users to question whether he was in distress.
But there was no emergency behind the look.
In fact, Sebogodi was simply fully committed to his character for the theatre production Black Moon, which was staged at this year’s National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
As additional details came to light, fans quickly understood that the frail, weathered appearance was the result of costume and makeup work designed for the production. Reactions shifted from concern to admiration, with many praising his dedication to the role and celebrating his return to the stage.
Black Moon brings together Sebogodi with other veteran actors Jerry Phele and Sanku Bokaba.
The show delves into themes including pain, pride, religion, and South Africa’s complicated history, and it drew praise for the impact of its seasoned cast’s performances.
Black Moon was one of the offerings at the 2026 National Arts Festival, held in Makhanda from 25 June to 5 July under the theme “Create New Worlds. Come Together.”
Now in its 52nd edition, the festival returned with hundreds of productions spanning theatre, music, dance, comedy, literature, and visual arts, while also giving a stage to both established and rising South African artists.
Even with financial strain continuing to affect the creative industry, several productions still managed to sell out, as audiences turned up in strong numbers throughout the run.
