AC Milan have parted ways with manager Massimiliano Allegri following a late-season slide that left the club’s hierarchy branding the campaign an “unequivocal failure,” with a fifth-place finish ultimately costing the team a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Club statement confirms Allegri departure
Milan said Allegri has been dismissed after the collapse in results in Serie A, a finish that meant the Rossoneri missed out on European competition’s top tier for a second consecutive season.
The club’s decision also extends beyond the head coach. Allegri will leave alongside senior executives Giorgio Furlani, Igli Tare and Geoffrey Moncada as part of a broader overhaul designed to reorganise the club’s football operations ahead of the next season.
Late-season collapse culminates in Cagliari defeat
Milan closed out an uneven second half of the campaign with a 2-1 loss at home to Cagliari on Sunday. Over their last four matches, they managed only a single win.
At San Siro, the final whistle brought heavy booing from supporters, reflecting the disappointment of another year without qualification for Europe’s premier club tournament.
In a statement, the club pointed to the sharp contrast between earlier promise and the end of the schedule, saying the “final stretch” did not match the level of performance shown before, with Sunday’s defeat in the final match turning the season into an unequivocal failure.
Allegri’s second stint ends after responsibility taken
Allegri’s exit comes after he returned for a second spell this season. He previously guided Milan from 2010 to January 2014.
During much of the campaign, Milan kept up a serious challenge for the Serie A title. However, the club’s form deteriorated sharply in the closing phase, leading to the outcome that ultimately left them outside the Champions League places.
The veteran coach accepted responsibility for the overall result following the Sunday defeat, with his departure confirmed 24 hours after the match.
Restructuring continues with RedBird’s model
Alongside the managerial change, Milan indicated that further personnel decisions are still to come. The club said more announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course, with the intention of ensuring the team is ready and well prepared for the next season.
The wider shake-up also mirrors the strategy of owners RedBird Capital Partners, whose involvement in reshaping the club’s leadership has been evident in previous changes.
- RedBird has shown little hesitation in altering AC Milan’s internal hierarchy.
- In 2023, the group removed club legend Paolo Maldini during a restructuring process with a similar objective.
