Bayern Munich veteran Manuel Neuer has agreed to stay at the Allianz Arena for another season, extending his contract by one year through 2027. The announcement came on Friday, keeping the 40-year-old goalkeeper at the club as he approaches a landmark spell in Bavaria.
Neuer’s previous deal was due to run out in the summer, but it will now continue beyond that deadline. The new agreement means he will spend a 16th year with the Bavarian giants.
“It was a clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” Neuer said. “All the conditions are met here: with this team we can beat any opponent,” he added.
Quick facts
- Manuel Neuer extended his Bayern contract by one year, keeping him at the club until 2027.
- The goalkeeper was 40 when the update was announced and his prior deal was set to expire in summer.
- The extension will mark a 16th year for Neuer at Bayern.
- Bild reported Neuer is expected to play fewer matches in 2026-27 to support a transition to backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
- Bayern also extended the contract of third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another season.
Neuer is widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the history of the position. His profile includes a third-place finish in the Ballon d’Or voting in 2014, sitting behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi—the last time a goalkeeper reached the top three.
With Bayern planning for the future, German tabloid Bild said Neuer is expected to reduce his match load during the 2026-27 campaign. The report framed his role as part of a smoother handover to back-up goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.
Bayern’s squad planning also extends beyond the main goalkeeper. The club have likewise moved to secure third-string keeper Sven Ulreich, extending his contract for a further season.
International legacy and Champions League impact
A World Cup winner in 2014 with Germany, Neuer stepped away from international football in 2024. He finished his time with the national team having earned 124 caps with the four-time world champions.
In recent Champions League action, the veteran was praised for his showing in the first leg of Bayern’s quarter-final against Real Madrid. Bayern won that away encounter, and Neuer was named UEFA man of the match for his role.
Neuer’s Bayern story has been long and decorated. He joined from boyhood club Schalke in 2011 and has gone on to enjoy a glittering career with the record German champions.
