Party leaders in Ogun East have rallied behind Governor Dapo Abiodun as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus choice for the district’s senatorial race, framing the move as both a bid to secure strong representation and a way to keep the party united. The endorsement was presented at a gathering attended by senior APC figures ahead of further party processing.

  • Senator Lekan Mustapha said the adoption reflects the people’s decision to secure effective representation at the National Assembly.
  • Chairman of APC in Ogun East, Dr. Adeleke Ogundoyin, formally forwarded Abiodun to the state party leadership for submission to the national secretariat as the district’s flag bearer.

The endorsement event drew prominent participants, including former deputy governors Yetunde Onanuga, Segun Adesegun, and Gbenga Kaka, along with the APC chairman in Ogun State, Chief Yemi Sanusi. Also present were the Deputy Chairman, Chief James Dina, the Chairman of the Ogun East Senatorial District, Senator Lekan Mustapha, and the APC in Ogun East Zone, Dr. Adeleke Ogundoyin.

Delivering the message to leaders and stakeholders, former Deputy Governor Segun Adesegun said APC members across the district had given unanimous approval to Governor Abiodun as the party’s consensus candidate for Ogun East Senatorial District. He positioned the decision as a district-wide effort to present a credible standard-bearer.

Stakeholders’ meeting referenced

Senator Lekan Mustapha added that selecting Governor Abiodun was not limited to party structures alone, but rather a collective choice by people in the district. He said the aim was to guarantee effective and high-quality representation at the National Assembly.

Mustapha also pointed to an earlier stakeholders’ meeting in Ogun East held on April 20, where participants unanimously adopted Abiodun as the party’s preferred senatorial option. He said the latest gathering was convened to formally communicate that position to both the governor and APC leadership.

In the formal sequence of the endorsement, Dr. Adeleke Ogundoyin, APC chairman in Ogun East, handed Governor Abiodun to Chief Yemi Sanusi, the chairman of the APC in Ogun State. Ogundoyin urged the state leadership to forward Abiodun’s name to the APC national secretariat, seeking his recognition as the party’s flag bearer for Ogun East Senatorial District.

Responding to the endorsement, Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed deep appreciation to leaders, stakeholders, and delegates from across Ogun East for the confidence placed in him. He described the consensus arrangement as an indication of unity, political maturity, and a shared dedication to advancing both the district and Ogun State.

The governor said he was humbled by the level of support and pledged that he would not betray the trust and confidence given to him by the people and APC leadership in Ogun East. He stressed that the decision would translate into service if he is elected to represent the district at the Senate.

Abiodun assured party supporters and residents that, should he win, he would deliver purposeful, people-focused, and quality legislative representation. He said his aim would be to draw additional development and democratic benefits to Ogun East.

He also used the occasion to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the unusual support Ogun State has received since he took office. At the same time, he commended Ogun East leaders for prioritising unity and cohesion, arguing that a consensus candidate would strengthen the APC heading into the 2027 general elections.

The governor reiterated his commitment to the party’s ideals and programmes, while promising continued collaboration with stakeholders across the senatorial district to sustain progress already recorded in Ogun State. He said he would keep working with the community to maintain momentum on development goals.

Abiodun further thanked Senator Olamilekan Adeola, former deputy governors, party executives, elders, and other stakeholders for their support and solidarity. He concluded by assuring them that the APC would remain united in the state and work toward victory.
