Oshoala Speaks Out After Nigeria’s Win Over Senegal and Kidnapping Rescue Call

Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala made headlines on the pitch and off it after Nigeria edged Senegal 2-1 in an international friendly on Friday. While the result will matter for preparations, Oshoala’s message following her strike has drawn widespread attention beyond football.

Nigeria, nine-time champions of Africa, overcame the Teranga Lionesses at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne as part of their build-up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The game acted as another important step in sharpening tactics and cohesion ahead of the tournament.

The Super Falcons controlled large portions of the match. Oshoala put Nigeria ahead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, giving her side the lead. Toni Payne then extended the advantage shortly before halftime, driving Nigeria into the break with momentum. Senegal responded late by pulling one goal back, but Nigeria managed the closing stages to hold on and secure what was ultimately a deserved win.

Although Oshoala’s goal played a clear role in the victory, it was her celebration that became the talking point. The veteran forward raised a wristband that carried the words, “Save the teachers. Bring back our children,” highlighting the recent abduction of pupils and staff in Oyo State.

The statement refers to the kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers, reportedly taken by armed gunmen during attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15. Reports also indicated that two members of school staff were killed during the incident.

Oshoala’s display was widely viewed as a plea for immediate action, while also serving as a reminder that the victims are still being held. By bringing the issue into the spotlight during an international fixture, the former African Women’s Player of the Year aimed to maintain public focus on the humanitarian crisis and the need for the safe return of those abducted.

Nigeria and Senegal will meet again on Monday as preparations continue for the WAFCON tournament.
