Southampton have been removed from the Championship play-off picture after an Independent Disciplinary Commission ruled the club committed multiple breaches of EFL rules connected to unauthorised filming of other teams’ training sessions.

Quick facts

  • Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs following an Independent Disciplinary Commission decision.
  • The breaches relate to unauthorised filming of rival clubs’ training sessions.
  • Ben Jacobs said Southampton admitted multiple violations involving observation of opposition training within 72 hours of scheduled matches.
  • Reported match incidents were against Oxford United (December 2025), Ipswich Town (April 2026) and Middlesbrough (May 2026).
  • Southampton received a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season.
  • Middlesbrough will replace Southampton in the play-off meeting with Hull City on May 23.
  • Southampton can still appeal, with the aim to resolve the matter by May 20.

Journalist and Premier League commentator Ben Jacobs said the club acknowledged a series of rule-breaking actions tied to monitoring opponents’ training sessions shortly before matches.

Those alleged incidents were linked to a run of fixtures: Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026, and Middlesbrough in May 2026.

Alongside the play-off ban, the disciplinary outcome includes a four-point reduction for Southampton in the 2026/27 season.

With Southampton now out of the play-offs, Middlesbrough will step into their spot for the play-off tie against Hull City on May 23.

Even after the ruling, Southampton retain the option to appeal, and all parties are reportedly seeking to conclude the process by May 20.
