Adebutu Courts Ogun Traditionalists, Pledges Accountable PDP Government

Ladi Adebutu has sought the backing of the Oloje traditionalist community in Abeokuta ahead of the 2027 Ogun governorship election, pledging accountable leadership, peaceful administration and responsible use of public funds if elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Key takeaways

  • Adebutu said local government allocations would reach councils and be used to support rural development.
  • House of Representatives candidate Toyin Amuzu urged voters to support the PDP at every level and cited a community transformer as one of its interventions.
  • Chief Mustapha Owolabi called for stronger political representation for Egbaland and said Egba interests must shape the state’s 2027 political arrangements.
  • Oloje elders said they received Adebutu for prayers and blessings and declared their intention to support his candidacy.

Adebutu promises accountable local government

During a visit to the Oloje traditionalist community in Abeokuta with members of his political team, Adebutu said a government led by him would be committed to transparency, stability and careful stewardship of public resources.

Speaking to the gathering, he promised that council finances would be recorded and accounted for under his administration. He also said funds intended for local governments would be released to them so that they could carry out meaningful development projects in rural areas.

Adebutu described himself as a committed Christian, while acknowledging the contribution of traditional institutions to peace, social unity and harmony within communities.

Toyin Amuzu, the PDP’s House of Representatives candidate, asked residents to vote for the party across all levels of government. He argued that the PDP had shown dedication to the advancement of Abeokuta and Ogun State.

Amuzu pointed to the installation of a transformer in the community as an intervention he said PDP members had helped secure. At the same time, he criticised what he regarded as insufficient action on electricity problems affecting parts of Abeokuta.

He urged residents to support those who had demonstrated a willingness to help, saying that a person prepared to offer a hand of fellowship would remain willing to do so. He appealed to voters to choose the PDP.

Amuzu also warned residents against allowing election-day cash gifts to determine their votes. He asked them to weigh the longer-term effect of their decisions rather than accept money and then face hardship for another four years.

Traditional leaders back political participation

Chief Mustapha Owolabi, the Akinfiwatolu of Egbaland, encouraged the traditionalist community and other residents to support what he characterised as a fresh political movement intended to deliver greater representation for Egbaland.

He urged the people to resist political manipulation and said the interests of the Egba people should be defended in the political dispensation beginning in 2027. Owolabi told those present to collect money offered by politicians if they wished, but to vote for Ladi Adebutu according to their consciences.

He further argued that the people of Ogun should have the decisive say over who governs the state. In his view, the government should embody the aspirations, interests and identity of the population.

Olawale Akanbi, Ọmọlẹ́gbẹ́ and one of the traditional elders, said the Oloje had welcomed Adebutu so they could pray for him and give him blessings before he continued his political journey.

Akanbi described the ballot as the principal means available to citizens to choose their leaders and said he was confident Adebutu would win. He explained that the community’s purpose in receiving the politician was to offer prayers and blessings so that those prayers would be answered and Adebutu would reach his intended destination.

Another elder, Chief Gbenga Adesina, Ojediran Fajegbinro, called the visit an important acknowledgment of practitioners of traditional religion as stakeholders in society.

Adesina said the traditionalists welcomed Adebutu’s decision to visit them after meeting Christian and Muslim groups. He said pastors and imams had been engaged, while practitioners of the Isese religion had also been recognised, adding that all three groups formed part of the community.

He declared his support for Adebutu, saying the person who came to seek the community’s support would receive it. Because Adebutu had visited the Oloje, Adesina said, the elders regarded him as their choice and would cast all their votes for him.
