Osun Governor Adeleke has won re-election after defeating APC candidate Oyebamiji in a closely fought governorship contest, according to figures declared at the INEC collation centre in Osogbo early Sunday.
Key takeaways
- Adeleke received 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815.
- The winning margin was 66,252 votes.
- Ballots were cast across all 30 local government areas in Osun state.
- Oyebamiji carried several local government areas but could not match Adeleke’s broader statewide performance.
Result of the contest
Joshua Ogunwole, the returning officer, formally announced the outcome at the Independent National Electoral Commission’s collation centre in Osogbo. His declaration confirmed Adeleke, who ran under the Accord Party, as the successful candidate.
The governor’s total of 511,067 votes put him ahead of Oyebamiji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, who finished with 444,815 votes. The difference between the two contenders was 66,252 votes.
Voting across the state
Electors in each of Osun’s 30 local government areas took part in the ballot to choose the official who would lead the state for an additional term. Oyebamiji mounted a substantial challenge and won in a number of local government areas.
Adeleke nevertheless prevailed because he accumulated stronger support across a greater number of local government areas, giving him enough of an overall advantage to remain governor.
