APC ward leaders in Abeokuta North met with former PDP members on Tuesday, offering assurances that the defectors will be fully incorporated into the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meeting aims at unity and formal integration
The discussions, held between APC ward leadership and the newly joined members, focused on how to strengthen party cohesion and ensure smooth preparations for the 2027 polls. The meeting also served as a platform for formally welcoming the defectors and integrating them into APC structures.
Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Fakorede Idowu—an APC leader in the ward and a board member from Ogun State—said the purpose of the visit was to reinforce unity and extend a formal welcome to those moving into the APC.
Idowu led a delegation of ward leaders to meet the incoming members and leaders from the PDP. The APC side said the outreach was designed to make clear that the new joiners would be carried along in the party’s activities at ward level.
Why Ward leaders say the move matters
Idowu said the ward’s leadership approached the meeting with the intention of keeping the process inclusive, arguing that political progress depends on collective action rather than individual effort.
- He said Ward 13 representatives came to engage those who recently decamped from the PDP to the APC.
- He told the defectors that APC leadership is prepared to involve them in the party’s work, saying politics cannot be driven by one person.
- He said unity is central to the ward’s approach and that the leadership is determined to protect the calm, peaceful atmosphere the area is known for.
Ward 13 described as a peaceful base for APC
Idowu described Ward 13 as among the most peaceful wards in Abeokuta North, adding that integrating the incoming members would strengthen the party as elections approach. He said the APC remains committed to inclusiveness and collective advancement.
He also appealed to the defectors to work closely with existing party members to help secure victories for all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.
Candidates named for 2027
In a call for coordinated support, Idowu asked attendees to cast their votes for a slate of APC candidates, listing the party’s nominees across levels of government.
- President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
- Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola for Governor of Ogun State
- Senator Shuaib Salisu for Ogun Central
- Hon. Olumide Osoba for the House of Representatives
- Hon. Babatunde Tella for the Ogun State House of Assembly
Idowu said the leadership would not leave anyone behind, and he stated that the defectors had agreed to support the APC.
Defectors pledge full commitment after assurances
Responding for the defectors, Oluwasesan Ogundeji—former PDP Secretary in Ward 13 and one of the leaders of the decampees in Abeokuta North—thanked APC leadership for the reception and for the assurances provided.
Ogundeji said the ward leaders had discussed with the group and promised that the new members would be carried along in the APC’s activities at ward level.
- Ogundeji said he and other defectors were assured they would be included in whatever the APC is doing at the ward level.
- He said the group was satisfied with the agreement reached during the meeting.
- He added that the defectors are prepared to work for the APC because that intention is already settled among them.
Support for APC candidates promised
Ogundeji further pledged that the defectors would back the APC and its candidates as the 2027 elections draw nearer. He said they would work relentlessly for the emergence of APC candidates in the general elections and described the group as united and ready to contribute to the party’s growth and success.
