The Peoples Democratic Party’s campaign convoy, headed by Ogun State governorship candidate Hon. Ladi Adebutu and Ogun Central senatorial hopeful Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, launched its mobilisation tour in the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency before continuing through Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South.
Campaign mobilisation
- At Agbado Station in Ifo/Ewekoro, residents filled the roads and nearby balconies, waving as they welcomed Adebutu, his running mate Hajiya Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, Obasanjo and other PDP leaders to the campaign launch.
- The convoy then travelled to Abeokuta North, where the party’s House of Representatives candidate is Arch. Dele Olaleye.
- A substantial crowd had assembled at NTA Junction in Totoro from about 10am, greeting the candidates with songs of solidarity and campaign chants.
- In their addresses, the senatorial and governorship candidates appealed for effective representation and asked voters to back PDP contenders for both the National Assembly and the state government.
- The campaign subsequently reached Abeokuta South, where Hon. Toyin Amuzu is contesting the House of Representatives seat for the PDP.
- Supporters turned out in large numbers there as well, accompanying the convoy to Ake Pavilion, the site of the Ogun Central campaign flag-off rally.
Appeals for support
At the rally, Adebutu asked Ogun Central voters to support Obasanjo, whom he portrayed as an experienced and dependable candidate. He said her performance in office had not been matched.
He also urged voters to reject what he called poor governance and choose what he described as “liberation” during the 2027 elections.
Adebutu further asked PDP members to attend the polls in large numbers on January 16, 2027, vote for the party and protect their ballots in the face of any intimidation.
His message was that supporters should vote in force, defend their choices and refuse to be intimidated.
Obasanjo said she was encouraged by the welcome she had received throughout the district. She said residents were still identifying projects and other interventions associated with her earlier period of representation.
She maintained that the results of that tenure could be seen in accounts from residents who said her interventions had helped many people escape poverty.
Obasanjo promised to expand that work if elected, saying she would seek to ensure that Ogun Central received a greater share of the benefits of democratic government.
Residents and party supporters who addressed the campaign said they remained committed to the PDP candidates and would vote for the party in January.
They pledged to cast their ballots for the PDP and stand firm in defending them.
