A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Sowunmi, has urged residents of Ogun State to deliver an exceptionally strong vote for President Bola Tinubu at the next presidential election, saying the state should turn its large electorate into what he called the “maximum available votes.”
Appeal for a stronger Ogun turnout
Sowunmi made the appeal on Thursday at a town hall in Ijebu North East Local Government Area. He said the purpose of his visit was not merely to seek Tinubu’s victory in Ogun, but also to mobilise a turnout large enough to give the President the highest possible vote count from the state.
Describing Ijebu North as one of the strategically important local government areas in Ogun East, he said electoral planning in the district would necessarily focus on both Sagamu and Ijebu North. He asked residents to support Tinubu and to turn out in numbers that would maximise the President’s result.
He pointed to Ogun’s electorate as evidence that the state could produce a much larger presidential vote. The registered voter population, he said, is now close to three million, giving Ogun the capacity to match the totals recorded in some of Nigeria’s most populous states.
- Sowunmi said Ogun should be able to compete electorally with Kano, Katsina and Kaduna.
- He argued that the state’s registered-voter base was large enough to generate a substantially higher presidential vote.
Tinubu’s prospects and the Ogun East Senate race
Sowunmi expressed confidence that Tinubu would win Ogun State, rejecting the suggestion that the President was headed for defeat there. His central request, he said, was for residents to appear at the polling stations in very large numbers and provide a strong numerical mandate.
Turning to the Ogun East senatorial contest, he told voters not to treat the election as a game of political manoeuvring. He urged them to weigh what he described as the advantages of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s candidacy.
In his view, Abiodun’s closeness to the business community and to the President could help secure benefits for the senatorial district and, more broadly, for Ogun State. He said those potential gains would be best advanced through the governor’s candidacy for the Senate.
- Sowunmi linked Abiodun’s candidacy to access to the President and to the business community.
- He said that proximity could improve the prospects of benefits reaching Ogun East and the wider state.
Response to questions about Tinubu’s health
Sowunmi also addressed speculation about Tinubu’s health and the President’s decision to miss the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly. He rejected claims that Tinubu was medically incapable of pursuing another term.
He said the President remained in good health and of sound mind, adding that non-attendance at the UN gathering should not, by itself, be treated as proof of illness.
