Taiwo Says Yayi Emerged as APC Consensus Candidate After Broad Consultations

Dr. Taiwo has said Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely called Yayi, became the All Progressives Congress’ consensus candidate for governor of Ogun State after broad consultations and agreement among the party’s senior figures and key stakeholders.

He made the statement in an interview on Oju Abe, a current-affairs programme broadcast by Splash FM in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Dr. Taiwo said the decision followed discussions involving the APC leadership, former governors and other influential members of the party in Ogun State.

He argued that Hunye’s purchase of the APC governorship nomination form was mainly designed to improve his bargaining position within the party, rather than signal a firm intention to contest the election.

“Hunye has a particular style of political engagement. My assessment is that he acquired the form to strengthen his hand in negotiations for a political appointment or role,” he said.

Dr. Taiwo recalled that Hunye used a comparable strategy during the first four years of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration, after which he was named a commissioner. He added that the party had subsequently suspended Hunye, with the disciplinary action starting in his ward and progressing through the APC’s various levels.

He said Hunye’s latest moves could not invalidate the position agreed by the party’s leadership and its major stakeholders.

“Anyone committed to the APC should recognise the authority of the party and comply with decisions made through its established structures. Hunye’s conduct recently has not shown adequate regard for that obligation,” Dr. Taiwo said.

He also dismissed claims that residents of Ipokia had thrown their weight behind Hunye’s bid for the governorship.

“Ipokia has not given Hunye an endorsement for governor. Claims that it has do not represent the common position of the people,” he said.

Dr. Taiwo said Hunye was now pursuing a settlement after the APC had made its stance clear. He characterised Hunye’s latest political engagements as calculated efforts to reposition himself in the party before the 2027 general elections.

Assessing the APC’s chances in the coming polls, Dr. Taiwo pointed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s record under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s development programme under the ISEYA agenda, and constituency projects supported by Senator Adeola as evidence of a strong platform for victory.

“The work carried out by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Dapo Abiodun and Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, together with the limited contribution I have made to my constituency, gives me confidence that our people will turn out in large numbers for me and give the APC an emphatic vote,” he said.

He also predicted that Adeola would overcome Peoples Democratic Party candidate Ladi Adebutu in the 2027 Ogun governorship contest.

“Adeola will beat Ladi Adebutu by a wide margin. I expect him to win in all 20 local government areas of Ogun State; the issue is simply how large the margin will be,” Dr. Taiwo said.

On plans for Tongeji Island, the APC consensus candidate promised to back all lawful initiatives seeking Federal Government intervention and greater attention for the project. If elected, he said he would use his position in the National Assembly to promote the development and help ensure that Yewa South and Ipokia residents share in its possible gains.

Outlining his constituency priorities, Dr. Taiwo said he would continue his education assistance scheme. The programme covers General Certificate of Education examination charges, as well as uniforms, school bags and educational supplies for students from less-privileged families.

He also promised to widen his support programmes for female traders and young people, focusing on schooling, vocational and practical skills, assistance for businesses, and access to income-generating opportunities.

“After my election, I will maintain and broaden the education, market-women support and youth advancement programmes. My aim is to offer representation that delivers tangible, measurable gains in the daily lives of our people,” he said.
