The Yayi Progressives Movement (YPM) has inaugurated a students’ wing and admitted the “No Women, No Nation” forum into its structure, as part of efforts to expand its grassroots base in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections. The announcement was made at a joint gathering of the groups in Abeokuta on Saturday.
YPM Convener Armstrong ‘Tope Akintunde said the movement would focus on engaging young people, especially students who had reached voting age, as a central part of its mobilisation programme. He described students as a vital part of society and an important force in the country’s future.
Akintunde said the YPM would continue to create opportunities for students to take an active role in its programmes, arguing that their participation was essential to building support at the grassroots.
He also received the “No Women, No Nation” forum into the movement, saying its reported strength of roughly 4,000 women reflected the YPM’s expanding presence across the state. With the latest additions, he said, the organisation could now claim about 55,000 members in Ogun.
Akintunde credited the movement’s apex leaders, State Executive Committee, local government coordinators and ward coordinators with sustaining its expansion. He thanked them for their continued work to advance the YPM’s objectives and mission.
He urged the newly affiliated groups, particularly the students and women’s forum, to step up their mobilisation at the community level before the 2027 polls.
The convener said the campaign would seek widespread backing for the movement’s principal, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, widely known as Yayi, along with other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates contesting positions from the presidency through the state House of Assembly.
Hon. Kehinde Odeneye, the movement’s co-convener and a member of its apex body, praised the students and “No Women, No Nation” members for deciding to join the YPM. He said their arrival showed that the movement’s sustained engagement with communities across Ogun was producing results.
Odeneye said grassroots outreach remained central to the YPM and was becoming more effective with each passing day. He also commended Akintunde for his persistence and dedication to strengthening the organisation, alongside its other leaders.
The new students’ wing is headed by Comrade Dotun Opaleye, who thanked the YPM leadership for giving students a formal place within the movement.
Opaleye said the wing was organising young people in tertiary institutions throughout Ogun and had set itself a goal of bringing 5,000 students into the YPM. He said he and his team were mobilising students who were prepared to support and promote the movement’s agenda.
He said the drive covered several institutions across the state, with particular attention to students interested in APC activities. Opaleye added that the students’ wing had already made substantial progress towards its 5,000-member objective.
He further praised the YPM for backing the recently completed voter-registration exercise on campuses. In his view, that support showed that the movement was serious about involving students and fulfilling its stated mission.
Mrs. Ogunsanya Olusola, a leader of the “No Women, No Nation” forum, also commended Akintunde for his efforts to promote the APC in Ogun State.
Olusola spoke during a ceremony at which the forum expressed its appreciation and decorated the YPM convener as its new patron. She said she was confident in the direction being provided by the movement’s leadership.
Chief Fajimi, chairman of the YPM board of leaders, thanked the movement’s members and supporters for their contributions.
He singled out the solidarity trek recently organised by the YPM students’ and youth forums for special praise, describing it as an unprecedented event in Ogun State’s political history.
