Oscar trial to run until April

Answering a query by reporters at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria during a lunch adjournment, Andrea Johnson said heads of argument would be prepared after 4 April.

Court would be in recess between 7 and 11 April and would not sit, she said.

Heads of argument would be submitted after the recess, and Judge Thokozile Masipa and her two assessors would then consider their verdict.

The trial was originally set down from 3 to 20 March.

Pistorius is accused of the premeditated murder of model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp in his home on 14 February last year.

He is also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and two counts of discharging a firearm in public.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Evidence so far has included the reconstruction of a toilet cubicle, marks on an autographed cricket bat, and varying versions of screams and gunshots heard from the direction of Pistorius’s home.

Yesterday, Defence advocate Barry Roux, told the North Gauteng High Court that Oscar Pistorius’s toilet door was tampered with. During his testimony, forensic expert Gerhard Vermeulen, told the Pretoria court about how the cricket bat was used to break through a toilet door shortly after the deadly shooting.

Vermuelen demonstrated how the signed cricket bat was used to bash down the structure. The bullet-riddled door was set up close to the witness box to recreate the crime scene. The state tried to show that Pistorius was in all likelihood on his stumps when he tried to break it down

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel clarified that the state believed Pistorius was wearing his prostheses when he fired the shots.

During cross-examination, Roux said there were additional marks on the door that weren’t there before.

Today, the former commander of the Boschkop police station in Pretoria, Colonel Schoombie van Rensburg, took the court on a tour of the double-storey home.

The Paralympian had a cabinet with several sunglasses, a black air rifle, and a baseball bat. The door to his bedroom had a small hole in it.

An open case with eight wrist watches was in his bedroom. A fan stood between the bed and the sliding door leading to the balcony.

The sequence of photos, taken by police hours after the murder, were displayed on screens around the court.

Viewers were taken on a step-by-step tour from the entrance hall, up the stairs, along the passage and to the main bedroom.

Many of the photos showed blood on the white walls and caramel-coloured tiled floors.
