It was raining 'Hallelujahs' this past Sunday at the Durban ICC during the annual Crown Gospel Awards.
Former Generations actress Sonia Mbele has had to explain herself after social media was abuzz on Sunday night when herself and Gospel musician Sipho 'Big Fish' Makhabane presented the Best Gospel Jazz Award that night.
The actress' exclamations of "HALLELUJAH" had the audience and viewers at home in stitches - so much so that Twitter ran with claims that she was drunk or on drugs.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Sonia said, “Once I was on stage I got possessed by the Holy Spirit. I was not under the influence of anything. I had not been in Durban for some time and I was just too excited.”
Big Fish was also contacted by the publication, admitting he was shocked by what happened and explained that Sonia might have been uncomfortable with her script as it contained a message on gender-based violence.
"Her script was also about the fact that some men are abused by women but she was not comfortable with that,” he said.
Founder of the awards show, Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule had this to say about the incident:
“I’m aware of the ‘Hallelujah’ incident but I didn’t see or hear it. I meant to talk to her about it but unfortunately there wasn’t time. I believe it was just one of those light moments."
