Hlalakwabafileyo, Ubambo Lwami, Kwakhala Nyonini, Sgudi Snaysi and Shaka Zulu...they all kept us glued to our seats. On this Throw Back Thursday, we are giving you a mini reminder of these entertaining 80s and 90s TV series. Which you've probably seen on the SABC Encor channel.
In no particular order, here they are:
Don Mlangeni did an amazing job playing the character of Mhlongo on Hlalakwabafileyo. Sadly, Daphney Hlomuka-Ngubane who played the character of MamMhlongo, Mhlongo's wife passed away in 2008 at age 59 after a long illness.
Tshepo Ndimande who played the character of Zuzumuzi is now a gospel music producer, he has produced for artists such as Lundi, Fikile Mlomo and many more singers.
Pha Woo! is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Ubambo Lwami. This series was based on love-triangle between Thoko, David and Bheka; and Thoko's gangster brother Mazwi played by Menzi Ngubane who always went that extra mile to protect his sister.
The hilarious series, Kwakhala Nyonini gave viewers the funny side of what it means be in a polygamist relationship. Mandlanduna's (Magic Hlatshwayo) polygamous ways left us in stitches.
Joe Mafela (Sdumo) was a hit in the 90s. Sgudi Snaysi was a comedy series starring Joe (Sdumo) , Daphney Hlomuka (Sis May), Louise played by Gloria Mudau; Gloria passed away at age 84 in 2011 and Thembi Mtshali who played the character of Thoko.
Have you guys seen Thembi Mtshali on SABC 2's 90 Plein Street? She looks absolutely gorgeous.
Our ultimate series has to be Shaka Zulu. This TV series directed by William C. Faure depicts the life of a Zulu war chief, Shaka. The very talented Henry Cele who played the unforgettable character of Shaka died in 2007 at age 58.
The SABC had some really entertaining series back then at least we get to relive some of these stories on SABC Encore.
