It’s been an incredible week for Boity Thulo, on top of a mesmerising year - where she has firmly established herself as one of South African hip hop’s most talked about rappers.

On Wednesday evening, members of the media were invited to Universal Music Group South Africa’s Night For The Stars - an awards ceremony that honoured some of their biggest musicians and it came as no surprise that Boity was among the award winners on the night.
The Wuz Dat star had the privilege of seeing her single go platinum and she earned herself a plaque to show for her efforts. As soon as she walked off the stage we caught up with the muso who was full of excitement when she said:

“I’ve got a plaque bruh! That is wild! Is this even a real thing? When they mentioned the amount of streams I was shocked. I thought they were talking about my followers. I am still shaking this year.”
Things have fallen into place remarkably quickly for Boity. The presenter-turned-rapper has made a strong impact in the music industry having released a number of charting singles and even more fiery collaborations. We took a moment to find out if these were the kinds of targets that she had set for herself when she embarked on her musical journey. She revealed:

“I am not joking I didn’t think about any of that. Everything I’ve been doing has been to establish myself and make myself comfortable, but I think the universe had other ideas and now here we are. Now I have to make those kinds of goals and set those kinds of targets for myself.”

With 2020 on the horizon, it came as no surprise to learn that Boity is plannning for the new year already - and she confirmed what many people had been wondering when she revealed her intentions of putting together a body of work. She confirmed:

“I need a full body of work, because I need my SAMA nomination. All those things require a body of work and now for the first time I want those accolades and I’m feeling a bit of the pressure that now I need to start delivering a full body of work.”

While she wasn’t in a position to reveal any secrets, she did give us a teaser of what next year holds for her:

“Next year there’s going to be more music, dope collaborations, people who I dig and who I love and who have been in the industry for a long time.”

Before we wrapped up, we put the Bakai rapper on the spot and asked which award she would love to win next year if she could pick only one. Let’s just say there were no real surprises here:

“I would be very happy winning a Best Newcomer award next year. I think I’ve done well enough to be in that space but really it’s up to the universe. It might give me more, it might give me something different and I am ready to go with that.”

Are you going to put money on Boity winning Best Newcomer next year?
