Another musician to recently speak out against the South African Music Awards is one-half of the Scorpion kings, DJ Maphorisa. Phori has also had it with the music awards, he took to Twitter to voice his frustration.

"Ke sharp ka di SAMA F...k them." He wrote. "We need online awards where everyone can vote and be a part of."

Lawd Phori doesn't believe in the traditional system of having a panel decide who released better music but rather, he wants the people to decide.

"This thing of 5 people sitting on a table and choosing their favourite artists must end ke Masipa. it's killing an African child’s dream"

In a follow-up tweet, he revealed that he plans to start his own music awards where he wants the fans to be the ones deciding who gets an award. "I am gonna start SA Online Music Awards where you guys will be the ones nominating and deciding who gets an award."

Phori does have a valid point. However, to have an industry that grows, we do need to have critics awards. We suppose there is both space for 'audience only' awards as well as critics awards.
