You Don’t Know What It Took To Get Here
We know our favourite artists down to their last children’s names. After all, we follow them religiously on social media, and keep abreast of all news articles coming out about them. If you are part of a fan base, you know exactly what I mean.

But we often forget that there was a time when they were unknown too, and they had to climb their way to the top. So this is a list of some of our favourite artists, how they started out in their careers, and how they were discovered and put on.

Mlindo the Vocalist

Mlindo the Vocalist is probably one of those artists who were just born to be stars. He reportedly started singing when he was just four years old, and obviously has music in his blood. He joined his church choir at age four, and started making his own music at 16.

He used to do covers of popular songs and post them on social media. In February 2018, DJ Maphorisa spotted the young star covering his hit song, Midnight Starring. He flew Mlindo to Jo’burg, and they started working together from then on.

Unfortunately, the two no longer see eye to eye, as each one feels exploited by the other. Phori thinks Mlindo is ungrateful, while Mlindo’s team and fans believe that Phori exploited and took advantage of him. We hope they can solve issues soon, as they were a force when they worked together.

Zodwa Wabantu

Zodwa Wabantu had quite a rough childhood. Her family was poor, and she often had to fight for food, especially after her mother died when she was only 11, and she was left to be raised by her grandmother, as her father had never been in the picture.

She ran away from home when she was 16, and started dancing, while she also worked at a debt collection company. It was at this time that she made her debut as a dancer in Mzansi nightlife. All it took was a black dress with a truly dramatic slit to make her the talk of the town, and she has been the pantyless dancer since.

Even so, it was DJ Tira‘s label, Afrotainment, that properly put her on and made her mainstream. There was speculation that they split because of bad blood, but Zodwa said she was just ready to be her own boss. Still, she does not understate the role Tira played in her career, and we love to see it.

Prince Kaybee

You probably won’t believe this, but Prince Kaybee played in church quite a bit early on in his career. He first got his big break when he joined the SABC1 DJ competition, which is where he got his first real, big audience.

Soon after, he got a booking agent who introduced him to a church, where he played for some time. He then moved to playing at clubs, which is where he was discovered by the Meritage music group. The group signed him as a producer and a recording artist. Shortly after, he released Yokinto, his hit single which propelled him to stardom, and the rest is history.

Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest is another artist that has had music in his veins since birth. Rather than wait to be discovered, Cassper was self motivated and started his own career as an independent artist.

It was while he was doing this that the late rapper Hip Hop Pantsula watched him perform and fell in love. The rapper was a sounding board for Cassper’s early career, and we are glad for his influence. Who knows, maybe he wouldn’t be the legend that he is now without Pantsula, and what a sad eventuality that would be for the SA hip hop scene.

Babes Wodumo

There has been a bit of controversy surrounding who truly discovered Babes Wodumo nd put her on. The singer was initially a model. But according to DJ Tira, it was her husband and her musical co-conspirator, Mampintsha Shimora who really turned her from a model to an artist.

A few years back, Nana Zondi, a Durban businessman, found himself on DJ Tira’s bad side when he claimed that he was the one who discovered Babes. As Tira said, all Nana did was to introduce her to the  “right” people, but the real credit should go to Mampintsha.

Whichever one of them you agree with, Babes had a whole team behind her rooting for her fame and success, so it is no wonder that she made it as big as she did.

Zahara

Bulelwa Mkutukana, aka Zahara‘s rise to fame is proof that one should never give up on their dreams. From a young age, Zahara knew that she could sing, and she was right.

She started out as a busker, performing on the streets for change, in East London. That was until Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza of TS Records discovered and signed her. She has since had her fair share of controversies, both professional and personal. She and DJ Sbu famously do not get along after their row over royalties, and she has also been thought to have an alcohol problem.

One thing has stayed true through it all… that she is a talented queen, and that is going nowhere.

From being homeless, to performing on the street, to performing in church, our celebrities have some pretty interesting backgrounds. If that did not inspire you to keep at your craft, I don’t know what will. You never know when your big break will find you!
