This year’s SAFTAs will be streamed live on the SAFTAs YouTube Channel and broadcast on S3 at 18:30 on Saturday, 2 September 2022. The red carpet is set to be hosted by SA’s leading daytime TV presenters Palesa Tembe, social media and TV personality, Lasizwe who will give viewers the front-row seat of the night’s most stylish dressed..
In explaining how the decision to host the awards show virtually was made, SAFTAs Executive Producer Anneke de Ridder explains it was decided when the bid was put out for production companies to produce the SAFTAs16.

“At the time, SA was still under lockdown and the bid criteria was per SAFTAs15 guidelines – no public event. Similarly, by the time the service provider Don’t Look Down was appointed, the country was still under lockdown. Given the restrictions with government institutions when it comes to changing the merits of a tender bid, we had to continue hosting the ceremony virtually. While we do acknowledge that it would have been ideal to celebrate with the industry in-person, our production company have worked exceptionally hard to give industry practitioners the honour they deserve. Our motif ‘Frame the Future’ speaks to this as we hope to build on the reimagined execution, we delivered last year. Plans for SAFTAs17 though are already underway and we definitely will resume with an in-person celebration of the industry’s best” added de Ridder

Speaking on the nominations recently, Makhosazana Khanyile who’s the Chief Executive Officer of National Film and Video Foundation said that this year’s theme “Frame the Future” was an urge for the industry to unite and work together in crafting a new path forward.

“Last year, we faced our greatest challenge ever post-Covid, this year, we celebrate the connectedness that helped us get through, while actively promoting optimism within our local industry. With the release of this year’s nominees, we are looking forward to a remarkable show that will showcase the creative innovation that our local industry has continued to display despite the circumstances that have been faced.”
