Her death was announced by her son on social media when he wrote "the tree has fallen...lala ma." He did not reveal her cause of death but from just watching his Showmax wedding special, Somizi & Mohale: The Union, it was revealed that she suffered a heart attack in January last year. She had been in and out of hospital.

But Mary Twala managed to attend her sons special day and that was probably the icing on the cake for Somizi. “When my mother came and watched me, it was like I was being watched by an angel who no-one else could see but myself,” an emotional Somizi said.

When he announced her passing, Somizi said the doctors had told him that she was up and a happy soul. He had then made his way to the hospital to drop off her gown but he was a little too late as she had passed away at 11 AM.

"Today's my late father's birthday.....and my mom decided to respond to his call to join him in heaven.....THE TREE HAS FALLEN...I'm shattered to the core.....but I'd be very selfish if I don't release her....my mom lived to the fullest....achieved beyond her dreams....its hurts like hell.....I wont lie.....a day without her calling to either say I love u or give me money.......thank you South Africa for loving the phenomenal super star that is my mother.......she left us peacefully around 11am at Parklane Pvt hospital as I was on my way to drop off her gown and a few minutes earlier the Dr called to say come she's up and jolly now.....I arrived a few mon late......LALA MA......" shared Somizi in his now-deleted post.

On her funeral which was held on July 9, Somizi said with pride that he gained a very powerful ancestor. “I know I have lost a mother on earth but gained the most powerful ancestor. Don’t be surprised if I rise beyond because I have the most generous ancestor. I promise to never make you an angry ancestor. Thank you for everything. I love you,” he said.

A year later, Somizi took to social media to remember her saying she might have left this earth but she has never left him, "On this day last year you left the earth but you definitely never left me....forever my Ma."

Mam Mary Twala was planning to attend a celebration with her friend Lilian Dube. She had visited her in hospital during her last few moments and said "Ngyakuthanda mngani wami, I miss you."

The two acted on SABC 2's Skwiza's and were gearing up to shoot another season. "I will nakanjani, I'll be part of Skwiza's," Mary promised.

Mam Mar Twala was in very high spirits and was looking forward to dressing up for the event they were going to attend. "Don't tell me it's a surprise baby. We are going to be toodoo," she told Lilian, wearing a hospital gown and a brown beanie. "hospital or no hospital, everything is phashash."

May her soul continue to rest in peace!
