For instance, Bolebedu music is understood to have originated from Limpopo, Gqom from KZN and Amapiano from either Soweto, the East Rand or Pretoria depending on who you are asking. But the consensus is that Amapiano’s most formative years were in Gauteng.
Therefore, when there is a sound which is originally from a preconceived location, everytime it finds success outside of that region, it seems to confuse many out there. Case in point is the recent viral video which showcased Gqom in a whole new light.
“South African Latinas” Temple Boys Cpt fo viral for “Gqomkaans”
Recently, a tweep took to Twitter to share a video which was circulated first through TikTok. The video had the funny caption which referred to coloureds as “South African Latinas.” Moreover, it suggested that the crowd in question was gathered listening to Gqom.
Surprisingly, when listening to the audio, it is immediately apparent that the gathered crowd is listening to Gqom. Specifically, a beat which has notes and melodies which are reminiscent of a song which could be released by DJ Tira with Dladla Mshunqisi. The only difference is that the lyrics are completely in Afrikaans.
As such, the comments section was filled with surprise and tweeps giving the performer his own Gqom-ified name in the comments section. Moreover, the trend gave rise to the comical reference to coloureds as South African Latinas.
However, the single that was being played was not by the artist who was front and centre. Instead, it is released by the unseen DJing duo behind the decks. The group is known as one of the most popular Gqom duo from Cape Town called Temple Boys Cpt. The single in the video in question was released back in October 2022 titled Saggies, featuring Young King.
While it seems that most South Africans outside of Cape Town might have not been aware of Temple Boys Cpt. One ZAleb that was well aware of the group was none other than Cape Town resident Kiernan “AKA” Forbes. This is as when the rest of the country was oblivious to them, AKA and daughter Kairo Forbes were already doing dance challenges to the song.
But who are the Temple Boys Cpt? Well according to the Daily Voice in September 2022:
These Cape Flats youngsters started recording music in their bedrooms and now they are TikTok sensations and celebrated for their Gqom. The Temple Boys, who hail from Ravensmead, recently released their popular tune Saggies, which has been trending on TikTok and Facebook.
Dylin “Mr Gham” Adams, Terriano “Mr Areveerend” Duimpies, Chadley “Mr Werkhom” and Ronin “Mr Stifler” Johannes, all 18, all met at Ravensmead High. They started making music in 2018, before releasing their breakthrough hit Slat N Spat in 2020. Terriano is still in Grade 11 while the others have finished school, but have other aspirations which include producing more sound.
