Whether it was being the first South African actress to lead a Hollywood series with Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad. A breakout role she followed as main supporting actress for the now critically acclaimed all-female led action blockbuster The Woman King. Mbedu has continued to prove why she is touted as one of the biggest promising names in Hollywood.
Thuso Mbedu marks another milestone in Hollywood
As if already being touted as an action hero star following portraying Nawi on The Women King was not enough. The KZN born starlet is now set to be memorialised forever as an action hero. This is as it has been confirmed that Mbedu is set to be the superhero for the upcoming Stranger Comics’ afro-fantasy series Tales of Asunda.
In the supporting press release shared confirming the news, it explained Mbedu’s collaboration with the publications’ president Sebestian A. Jones for the comic series by sharing that:
“Mbedu will co-write Niobe: She-Tribe with Stranger Comics president Sebastian A. Jones. The new one-shot will follow Tales of Asunda’s lead character, the titular Niobe, as she finds herself thrust into an ethical conflict when she encounters a tribal society that selects its new leader in a fight to the death—finding herself up against generations of traditional customs or facing the idea of keeping herself hidden away from the world of Asunda.”
Moreover, it went on to share a first look at Mbedu as the titular character of Niobe. The animation was drawn by acclaimed illustrator Tehani Farr.
Currently, there is not set date as to when the comic book is set for release. However, Mbedu did take the time to thank Stranger Comics for choosing her. Moreover, she highlighted how as a fan of comic books, how much of an honour it was to have been selected.
While it seems that Mbedu cannot get any more recognition and success, it seems that 2023 will simply mark a continuation of the success she has already accrued. This is as Mbedu has confirmed being tied to another production for the coming year.
Moreover, as producer with her own production company, Mbedu has confirmed that she has inked a deal with Paramout+ back in April 2022, which she was elated for as it for signified that, “as an African woman, to get an opportunity to tell stories that will uplift, empower and shape new ways of thinking and seeing the world, is absolutely amazing.”
The deal as explained by US publication Deadline reads:
“The Underground Railroad star Thuso Mbedu is to create a suite of shows for Paramount+ outside the U.S. after striking a first-look deal with VIS Social Impact division.
The fast-rising South African actress will create, develop and produce scripted and doc programmes focused on equity, climate and health for the cause-driven production division of Paramount Global’s production arm.”
