Her powerful performance on The Underground Railroad is still getting her the much deserved Hollywood recognition and is filling up her awards won. Thuso is nominated for Best Actress in a Limited series at the Critics Choice Awards.

The Amazon limited series also scooped up an accolade at the American Film Institute for Television Program of The Year.

When she won her Gotham Award, Thuso said, "Waking up to a bunch of missed calls from my manager and thinking I might have missed my pickup (for the first time in my life) only to be told about this great news. What a pleasant surprise. Tied with Mr. Ethan Hawke. Thank you so much @thegotham It’s extremely humbling and encouraging."

That's not all, Thuso also won another award this past month at the 2021 GQ Men Of The Year Awards. The local awards ceremony gifted her the award for Woman Of The Year.

Thuso is currently working on a film with iconic actress Viola Davis for a film called The Woman King. Speaking to W Magazine she expressed excitement with working with Viola and said she has studied Viola and how she operates, she then drew a conclusion that they approach their work in similar ways.

“Viola said that she puts an emphasis on finding the why of any character—the reason this character makes any of the choices they make. For the longest time, before coming across that interview, whenever people would ask me about my process, I didn’t know how to articulate it. Listening to her, I thought, That’s exactly how I approach my work!”

On her acting skills, she said, “I want my fighting skills to be somewhere in the vicinity of my performance skills. With the performance, I do all the preparation, and then sort of stow it away and let it live in the moment. I want to get the fighting to a place where it would also come as naturally as possible."

New Mzansi talent has joined Thuso on The Woman King. Lion King composer Lebo M is one of them. Seputla Sebogodi, Masali Baduza and Thando Dlomo are also starring on the South African shot film.

Thuso Mbedu spoke a little more about the film in an IGTV,, “The show is going to be worth watching, I promise you. And then woman King (screams). I found out about the project in 2019 right. It was like just at the beginning. We had just started shooting Underground Railroad. We were shooting in Georgia right then I went to LA for a short break and I was just taking general meetings. And I went to meet Viola David and her husband’s production company. And they had just told me about this project.

"It is set in the 1800s in Africa and it’s based on real-life events of women warriors. I am excited to be part of the story because we are telling stories about Africa.”
