Born on the 6th of November in 1978 in Grahamstown, South Africa, television and radio broadcaster Unathi Nkayi has grown to become one of the most popular personalities in the country.
She is not only loved for her broadcasting skills but also for her amazing voice.
She has worked with some major stations in the country including YFM, Metro FM, Kaya FM, and Star FM
Today she announces that she has obtained her doctorate, introducing herself to the masses as Dr Nkayi.
“My paternal grandfather named me Fundiswa, a name I grew up hating NOT understanding the generational curses he was breaking at THAT moment.”
“As the only grandchild he named something I brag about to all my cousins and sisters️️️ I now understand what he was doing for our family. His son and his wife, my parents left SA for 11 years and raised us out of the country for THAT specific reason.”
Unathi continued “Becuase my grandparents wanted ALL of us to be educated at a time when apartheid wouldn’t allow it for us black people. My parents only saw their parents twice in this time becuase of THIS sacrifice.”
The former Idols SA judge now loves her middle name even more. She says education looks good on her and we couldn’t agree more Dr Nkayi.
Toward the end of the year 2021, Unathi Nkayi was let go by her employer at the time Kaya 959 after she reportedly went against the radio’s standards although her exact transgressions were not revealed by the station.
"Ms Nkayi’s contract has ended prematurely due to certain conduct that rendered the relationship intolerable going forward. Kaya 959 can confirm that certain incidents had occurred, which resulted in the breakdown of the trust relationship between the two parties.
"The business can further confirm that due process was followed and the decision was therefore made to part ways with Ms Nkayi," read part of Kaya FM's statement.
After Unathi Nkayi’s dismisal became public, several speculations emerged about the wat had exactly happened with some reports suggesting that she had been involved in a heated altercation with her former colleague Sizwe Dhlomo.
A few days later after leaving Kaya 969, Unathi Nkayi took to her Instagram page to provide a statement about what happened. In her statement, she revealed that she had been silenced by Kaya 959 and was not allowed to talk about what had happened in public due to a contractual agreement, explaining that she had handed over the issue to her attorney.
Nkayi also cleared the year about the GBV stories that had been making rounds and said that she had never accused Sizwe of committing any acts of GBV against her.
