South African designer Rich Mnisi had a passion for fashion from a very early age. It all began when he turned his sister’s pair of jeans into a skirt. Ever since, he’s been creating, re-working, and designing fabric into pieces of art. 

Drawing inspiration from pop culture and blending it with his African heritage, he’s got attention not only in South Africa but also on the international front, including from soft drinks brand giant Coca-Cola. Here’s how his rise to fame started. 

This very talented fashion extraordinaire kick-started his career in 2014 when he established the OATH Studio, where he worked solo. This helped him gain an understanding of what people wanted. 

That same year, he won the Young Designer of the Year Award by the African Fashion International.

In 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Rich Mnisi designed masks called ALKEBULAN, meaning "mother of mankind", an ancient name of Africa. The masks were costly as they ranged between R399 and R1999. 

In 2021, Rich Mnisi released a collection called Hiya Kaya 21. It celebrates the Tsonga culture and their colourful clothing. 

An iconic piece in the collection is his signature Xibelani skirt, which cost a whopping R60000, a traditional skirt for Tsonga women from the Limpopo province in northern South Africa.
