"What would a braai be without pap? Yo yo yo phela mina I love my braai and ipapa must be there, obviously. Imagine eating braai meat with potatoes or rice - it just won't be the same," said kwaito star Arthur Mafokate.

Chomee, who was performing at the ANC election manifesto launch at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga yesterday, agreed with Mafokate.

"There is no braai without pap. I love my meat and I love my pap, the two need each other. One cannot exist without the other."

"The majority of South Africans survive on pap as a staple, not just for braais like us. This will seriously affect them." Added Chomee.

Singer, songwriter, poet and producer Khethi said: "What? Wait! A shortage of maize, guys, spells a shortage of corn! Vele ipapa I will surely miss but. a braai with no sweet corn would be sad. da good mbila roasting in da fire is historic. popcorn. and Gogo's phalishi?. Hey you watch it now."

According to Sunday World, predictions are that South Africa could run out of maize as early as next month, even though it posted a surplus last year.
