Babes Wodumo might one of the biggest stars in the country right now, but the self-proclaimed queen of gqom music has revealed that she too suffers from insecurities. Particularly, when it relates to award ceremonies. And the one award ceremony to blame for that is the contention South African Music Awards (SAMA).

A little history lesson, Babes Wodumo released her debut album, “Gqom Queen, Vol. 1” back in 2016. The album contained arguably the hottest song of 2015 into 2016, “Wololo,” featuring her ultimate favorite feature Mampintsha. The song was nominated at the SAMAs for the Song of the Year record for that year but got snubbed.
Moreover, not only was the song snubbed but Babes Wodumo as a whole was snubbed by the music awards. Many believed that the snub was due to the star being from Durban, and the SAMAs at the time was considered to only credit artists that make it in Johannesburg.
Basically, the conversation was the same one that artists from Limpopo like Master KG, King Monada, and Makhadzi had about the awards show this year. A few years back, artists from KwaZulu-Natal were having the same issue; that is until the “Durban” sound was ingratiated into popular culture.
Currently, Babes Wodumo is nominated at the upcoming “KwaZulu-Natal Entertainment” or better known as the KZNEA. The “Elamont” hitmaker is nominated in the category for 2020’s “Best Female Artist.” And the recognition is well deserved considering that the star has been dubbed as the musician that has revived the genre of gqom music back into the mainstream.
For a while, the star did not speak about the nomination. But with the award show nearing and her fellow competitors campaigning to take the award home, Babes has decided to fight for her crown. In addressing the matter of her silence about the nomination, she addressed her insecurities and asked for the support of her following to take the award home.
The current era for the leading gqom musician has showcased a different version of Babes. This era despite a little hurdles from the like of “friends” like Tha Simelane, has seen a more mature and focused Babes. This could be because of the evolution her relationship has taken, or the fact that she found church again, or the love that she gives publicly to her parents. Whatever it is, we love seeing it.
