Bonang Matheba
The most recent episode of the Showmax soapie, The Wife, left viewers sweating. The sex scene between Zandile the Resolute and her husband Nkosana gave too much heat, and as it turns out, even Bonang Matheba is not immune.
Social media was on fire with viewers discussing the latest episode, particularly the sex scene. It left many questions on everyone’s minds. Were the actors completely nude? Because Khanyi Mbau’s tattoo – she plays Zandile – was visible in the scene, and we all remember the shock that Mzansi received the first time a sneak peek of the tattoo was seen online, because of where it is. So for that to be visible… well, you get the question.

Another big concern was whether the actors’ real life partners were okay with them filming such a steamy scene. I mean, considering how much of their bodies were exposed, and how believable the whole thing looked, it must have been tough for Kudzai Mushonga – Khanyi’s boyfriend – to watch, right? It takes a great degree of self assurance and security in a relationship to be okay with that.

But the best part came when even Bonang was caught up in the rush to watch the raunchy scene. It started when she spotted a tweet from a social media user, saying that the show is basically pornographic. As soon as she heard that, she said she was going to rush off and watch it, raising eyebrows, including Mohale’s.
Fans are tickled by the fact that Bonang would not have watched the show if it hadn’t been described as pornographic, and they are wondering what that says about her film and TV tastes. She has been told she loves tlof tlof too much, and even her close friend Mohale was shocked.

But she is an adult and she is allowed to enjoy whatever she enjoys, as long as it’s neither illegal nor hurting anyone. Plus, she just said what everyone was thinking.

After how much the show trended online because of that one scene, surely more viewers were drawn in out of curiosity. And if this was a marketing tactic, then hats off to the show runners.

Pearl Thusi also recently used a similar strategy to market her newly released film, Wu Assassins: Fistful of Vengeance. She tweeted asking fans not to make the movie about her one sex scene. But of course, that is what they made it about, and it drove fans to watch it in masses.
The show turned out to be much more than just that scene, and she has been receiving rave reviews ever since. Honestly, she deserves it. She did a magnificent job on the movie!
