Buhle Samuels has opened up about being bullied in high school, for having a good command of the English language.
As sweet and innocent as young pupils can be, they can also be bullies whose tactics leave long-term emotional and sometimes physical scars on their victims.
Muvhango actress, Buhle Samuels recently revealed that she was a constant target at school for not being fluent in vernacular, especially IsiZulu. During her schooling days, Buhle conversed only in English, which led to her fellow school mates into believing that she was a black American.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the talented actress explained how speaking good English at school created problems for her:
"How it started was that people thought I was a black American because I spoke English, but I wasn’t. I just didn’t know how to speak Zulu because of the school I attended. I struggled with vernacular.”
In high school, however, Buhle Samuels grew thicker skin and was determined to not allow the bullying to become a recurring struggle in the remainder of her high school years.
"Those were the hardest days of my schooling life. I decided to stand up for myself the next time they tried, which was in high school. I was very strong and wouldn't allow any bullying near me.''
“One day during my first year at high school I stood firm and told the tormentors where to get off. Ever since that day I never allowed such behaviour.”
Bullying isn't an occurrence only within the children sphere but also thrives in adulthood.
Trolls continue to body shame Buhle on these social media circles but having experienced bullying before, Home-girl has learnt a thing or two on how to deal with the hate as an adult.
"I just smile and move on whenever I feel adult bullying in my space. It is a popular norm on social media, but I am a survivor of such and I know how to handle it.''
In the year 2018, Buhle Samuels had an interesting stint on eTV's soapie, Imbewu: The Seed - a predominantly IsiZulu speaking show.
Legions of her fans, highly anticipated to see how she would tackle her Zulu speaking role as Zandile. And boy did she kill it!
Although there were obvious giveaways that Sis didn't have a firm grip of the Zulu language - she remained a far cry from the Buhle who couldn't even utter a word of vernacular!
